Adding video

Heather Morton has a fabulous interview with Sylvain Dumais which all of you need to read. Don’t just look at the work (though that is worth seeing), but rather pay attention to what he is saying about the convergence of still and motion imagery.

He may be very right when he says that, in a few years, still-only photographers will be rare and struggling.

This is not a bad thing unless you choose to make it so. Your vision can transcend the still medium into motion, I’m betting. At the very least, exploring the possibilities will open up your mind to new ways of thinking creatively. The technology is not anywhere near as daunting as in the past.

If anything, the traditional technical videographers are going to be more threatened in this new world. Like when digital transformed still photography, the technicians without vision will be pushed out by the new breed who produce vision-based work.

I’m looking forward to seeing what a lot of you produce. This is an exciting time.

  1. Thank you so much for the posting. The links included in the blog were valuable beyond measure.

However let us not forget the future is unknown (take a moment to look back on your own predictions let alone the predictions of the would be seers). The world is changing faster each day, its tough to keep track of what we had for lunch yesterday. What is hot now might very well be old hat in a week. So what will last and what will have value?

I think it wise to keep perspective. As we all know from our past many many have said they know the way to Disneyland only to find them on a street corner later.

Lastly, Sorry Leslie for my lack of writing skills or use of grammar. as Piglet said to Pooh “Now Pooh we can all be good at everything”

  2. My business has transformed completely this year. I have to say this has been my fav year in business. It’s been an adventure indeed but motion has brought in more then double the work my stills have this year.

I went to school for animation and I’m excited at the fact that I’m going to be able to use what I learned but now its ten years latter and I find myself learning After Effects all over again.

The biggest thing for me to get used to has been the structure of motion work. The prepro is so much more involved then shooting stills but the end result is worth it.

Creatively this has been my most satisfying year.
