Danger Will Robinson!

This is another one of the things you have to get used to if you’re a Midwestern transplant to SoCal: the utter lack of rain and the results when it does actually “threaten” to rain. It’s been, I believe, 181 days since San Diego has officially had any rain. That’s about six months. Dry? Yeah, you could say so. Nothing since April 17. Wow.

If you go to weather.com today, you’ll find that there are severe weather notices for extreme southwestern California. Click on them and they are dire warnings that we might possibly get some rain tonight into tomorrow.

So why the dire warning? Because we haven’t seen moisture in any form from the skies in six months and that means that the second it starts raining, regardless of whether it’s a torrent or a sprinkle, the roads (especially the freeways) will turn into one big oil slick.

It will get ugly. At least it’s over a weekend, so the traffic won’t be quite as bad as it could be, but still. There will be at least one spin-out on the 805/8 interchange just a stone’s-throw from us, and the 15 will be a parking lot tomorrow at some point, I’m sure.

For me, if it rains, I swear I’m just going to stand out in it and let my skin soak in it. I actually miss the rain…some…except when driving…especially in a Miata….
